Sipadan Island
Borneo Divers Diving on Sipadan was Pioneered by Borneo Divers. Above the water, it’s just a tiny 40 acre spot of jungle with a white sandy beach. But below the water, Sipadan’s vertical topography and abundant marine life make it one of the world’s most desired destinations. Now Sipadan is entering a new age of conservation. As of January 1st 2005, all resorts will vacate the Island and it will become a fully protected conservation zone. Work is in progress to list Sipadan as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Borneo Divers is proud to support this conservation effort and is working with the Malaysian government to secure Sipadan’s future protection. In a landmark decision, the Malaysian government has pledged to give the Island of Sipadan the protected status it has long merited. The first phase of hte project will be the removal of all resorts from the island. By removing the human influence from the island, nature will have the opportunity to restore the pristine condition of the ecosystem. In addition to removing all human habitation infrastructure from the island, daily visits will be controlled by placing quotas on the number of divers that can visit each day. Anyone who has visited Sipadan in the last decade will agree that this plan is a positive step in the conservation of one of the World’s truly great dive destinations. The convenience of stepping off the beach into the abyss will be missed, but the long range benefits are worth the extra effort. Additionally, a biological survey in underway with the goal of having Sipadan listed as a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO. Borneo Divers applauds the efforts of the Malaysian Government to ensure the future of Sipadan and we are working in full cooperation on the project. Park Rangers will continue to operate the turtle hatchery on Sipadan in their efforts to save the endangered Green Sea Turtle from further reductions in numbers. Each year, many thousands of baby Turtles are successfully hatched and released by the rangers to begin their long journey at sea. |

Malaysian Airlines and Borneo Divers hosted a trip for some of us lucky dive travel wholesalers to check out Borneo’s dive resorts. We first journeyed to Labuan Island, a new tax haven lying off the west coast of the state of Sabah. We became "techie divers" getting our Nitrox Certification which doubled our bottom time enabling us to explore Labuan’s great wrecks. The Cement Wreck, carrying building materials for the Sultan of Brunei’s new palace is now a home for thousands of baby barracuda, soft corals, scorpion fish, nudibrachs, crabs and more. An American warship, the Salute, is a toy chest of war machinery. We then traveled to Tawau on the southeastern coast. This is the jumping off point for Sangalaki Resort, an island off the Indonesian section of Borneo and reopened thanks to the efforts of Borneo Divers. This small coral atoll floating about 30 miles offshore is a nesting haven for green turtles and a playground for mantas. The resort is run by a great Aussie couple, Graham and Donna, with dive masters, Matt and Zane. The bungalows are spacious with ceiling fans and bathrooms. Dining is in a communal area, plus a separate area equipped with VCR and soon, E-6 processing. Three boat dives are offered daily as are several night dives. Dive sites are within 10 minutes surrounding Sangalaki and about an hour over to Kakaban Island. The diversity of sea life is amazing with unusual nudibranchs, black ribbon eels, pavos razorfish, leafy scorpionfish & mantis shrimp. For those looking for the big stuff, mantas parade at Manta Run and there’s sharks off the walls of Kakaban. At night 30-70 green turtles lumbered ashore to lay their eggs. I felt truly lucky to witness this incredible scene. After Sangalaki, we headed back to Tarakan to re-enter Malaysian Borneo. At Tawau, we caught the boat over to Sipadan Island Resort to stay at Borneo Dive Lodge. The accommodations are varied with new rooms underway with private facilities, and the old huts with shared bathrooms. Sipadan is a cone rising 2000 feet from the ocean floor with walls facing busy ocean currents. Schools of big eyed jacks, barracuda, shark, bumphead Maori wrasse, and turtles galore flow past - all this just steps from the dive shop right off the beach! Borneo Divers is a world-class outfit catering to your every need. So what of Borneo’s steamy jungles? I journeyed into the jungles of eastern Sabah to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center of Sepilok, not far from the town of Sandakan. We explored this lowland jungle region with our guide and came face to face with several orangutan in various stages of being reintroduced into the wild. It was incredible to witness the successful efforts at Sepilok. These gentle primates with their incredibly humanlike features are making such a comeback. Then, I traveled up the Sukau River to stay at Old Ben’s River Lodge. We saw comical proboscis monkeys (long nose) and makaks. At dusk and dawn, we explored small tributaries by motorized dugout with the sights and sounds of the rainforest all around. Lastly, Malaysian Airline’s service out of Los Angeles was top rate. It’s an adventure just getting to Borneo, but once you’re there, you will treasure the experience. If you’d like to hear more about my adventures in Borneo, give me a call or send me an email. I’d love to help you plan your adventure to this incredible destination. The Borneo Lodge is nearest to the drop-off with native style, huts made of wood, bamboo and nipah palm. The huts have twin beds with a sliding bamboo door dividing the room. Some of them now have private bathrooms and are set back from the beach, while others are on the beach and share a bathroom. All huts have mosquito nets, fans, electric lights and towels. The share bathroom is away from the rooms and has western flush toilets and solar heated fresh water showers. Meals are served in the central dining room buffet style. There are two generators and an inverter system that supplies all the power and has 220 volt and 110 volt charging capacity. Borneo divers offer 80 cubic feet tanks, weights and belts which all are included in the price. If you need rental gear (additional charge) you will need to reserve equipment well in advance as it comes from their head office 300 miles away. Danum Valley & Borneo Rainforest Lodge The Danum Valley is Sabah's largest protected area of lowland dipterocarp forest for the conservation, research and education of rainforest wildlife welfare. Living in this lush pristine jungle is some of Borneo's most exciting wildlife—the rare Sumatran rhino, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, elephants and over 275 bird species. Their forest home is made up of the tallest and oldest 200 species of tree. Day trip visits can be made to the Danum Valley Field Center, one of the foremost tropical rainforest research facilities in Southeast Asia. The Danum Valley is 55 minutes flight time away from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu off the east coast of Sabah. You may also reach Lahad Datu from Sandakan, Semporna or Tawau (2-3 hours driving time). Borneo Rainforest Lodge offers the rainforest experience with comfort, privacy and good food. Around 20 chalets made from river stone and core logs are styled after traditional Sabah Kadazan Dusun dwelling. The main lodge is connected by an attractive walkway and houses the restaurant, a bar and a gift shop. Guided jungle walks are offered daily. Borneo Rainforest Wonder 3 Days / 2 Nights Day 1 Transfer from Lahad Datu to Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Guided rainforest walks. Day 2 Coffin Cliff and Jacuzzi Pool for a swim and picnic. Wildlife hike. Day 3 Return to Lahad Datu. |
